In the summer of 1863, a retired sea captain named William Holdredge created a plan for a new type of insurance company.  

Backed by half a dozen San Francisco businessmen, the new company would indemnify property owners against the perils of fire. More importantly, though, it would contribute toward a fund to benefit the widows and orphans of the San Francisco volunteer firefighters. That idea became the distinctive charter for a new company named Fireman's Fund.

The support of everyday heroes continued as we grew. In fact, Fireman's Fund became known for protecting individuals who faced uncertainty as part of their daily lives. Whalers, Golden Gate Bridge workers, astronauts, film makers and even Charles Lindbergh are all part of the company's rich history.
