A green home is constructed with renewable, recyclable building materials and low emission paints and carpets. Homes that are certified green by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) or Earth Advantage have energy-efficient heating and lighting and have ventilation systems designed to ensure healthy indoor air.
According the USGBC, green homes use 40 percent less energy and 50 percent less water than standard homes. Toxin-free materials help reduce indoor air pollution; special ventilation systems circulate fresh air, resulting in less potential for mold.
